DHANUSHKODI KADAL POOJAI
'Kadal Padayal' - Offering to the divine
The significant and most expected event of the Kadal Poojai is the ‘Padayal’ which we offer to Kodi Swamigal in front of the roaring Indian Ocean. The faith among the devotees is Kodi Swamigal arrives in the form of waves to sweep the padayal and bless all the devotees who throng the shores of holy land.
The origin of Kadal Poojai
The lone figure of Kodi Swamigal stood amidst the expansive dunes of Dhanushkodi, far from the bustling harbour where crowds of visitors thronged. Deeply immersed in an extraordinary penance, balanced on one leg, his eyes were fixed on the point where sea and sky met. The unusual scene of a monk standing on top of the mound did create curiosity among the visitors, who occasionally either shared biscuits or offered some money. Neither of the two bothered or disturbed Kodi Swamigal.
By Kodi Mahaan himself.
Interestingly, whenever anybody gave money or food to Kodi Swamigal, he immediately distributed it to others. If nobody was near him, he offered food to the Bhairavars (A term used to refer to dogs as deities) and Sea Mother. This act of providing food to Sea Mother by Kodi Swamigal later evolved into the Kadal Poojai function to honour the Eternal Mahaan.
The Mythological connection with Kadal Poojai
The people of Brindavan used to conduct a special pooja every year and offer food to Lord Indra. Once, on Lord Krishna's advice, the people of Brindavan did pooja for Govardhana Giri (hill) instead. This irked Lord Indra, and the people had to face his wrath in the form of heavy rains. Finally, the people of Brindavan surrendered to Lord Krishna. Out of his benevolence, he gave shelter to the people of Brindavan by lifting Govardhana Giri and creating a roof above them.
When did Kadal Poojai begin?
Only a mahaan can tap the frequency of another mahaan. The tradition offering Padayal and Kadal Poojai resumed after Sinjiwadi Mahaan told couple of his devotees.
From 2000 onwards.
Only a Mahan can tap into the frequency and decode the thoughts of another Mahan. In the year 2000, a Mahaan named Sinjawadi Gopalswami directed the devotees of Kodi Swamigal to conduct this Kadal Poojai from the 3rd Day of the star Maham, which falls in the Tamil month of Maasi
.
Ms. Kalyani ammal from Sinjiwadi, Sridhar and Ramesh from Puravipalayam took the instructions from Sinjiwadi Gopalswami. They undertook the journey of visiting Dhanushkodi and commenced the Kadal Poojai offering for Kodi Swamigal since 2000.
